Broadband detection of small electronic signals from cryogenic devices, withthe option of simple implementation for multiplexing, is often a highlydesired, although non-trivial task. We investigate and demonstrate asmall-signal analog-to-frequency conversion system based on relaxationoscillations in a single Josephson junction. Operation and stability conditionsare derived, with special emphasis on noise analysis, showing the dominantnoise sources to originate from fluctuation processes in the junction. Atoptimum conditions the circuit is found to deliver excellent noise performanceover a broad dynamic range. Our simple models apply within the regime ofclassical Josephson junction and circuit dynamics, which we confirm byexperimental results. A discussion on possible applications includes ameasurement of the response to a cryogenic radiation detector.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
