Brillouin scattering has been used to measure the dynamic structure factor ofglycerol as a function of temperature from the high temperature liquid to theglassy state. Our investigation aims at understanding the number and the natureof the relaxation processes active in this prototype glass forming system inthe high frequency region. The associated character of glycerol is reflected bya rather simple relaxations pattern, while the contributions coming fromintra-molecular channels are negligible in the GHz frequency region. Thetemperature behavior of the characteristic frequency and lifetime of thelongitudinal acoustic modes is analyzed, suggesting that a phenomenologicalmodel which only includes the structural ($\alpha$) process and the unrelaxedviscosity is able to catch the leading contributions to the dynamics of thedensity fluctuations. This ansatz is also supported by a combined analysis oflight and inelastic x-ray scattering spectra. The temperature dependence of thecharacteristic time of the $\alpha$-process, $\tau_\alpha$, obtained by afull-spectrum analysis conforms to the $\alpha$-scale universality, i.e. thevalues $\tau_\alpha$ revealed by different experimental techniques areproportional the ones to the others. The non-erogodicity parameter smoothlydecreases on increasing the temperature, and no signature of the cusp-likebehavior predicted by the idealized mode coupling theory and observed in otherglass-formers is found in glycerol.Comment: RevTeX4, 14 pages, 9 EPS figure
