A Pilot Study. Alcoholic beverages such as wine, champagne or beer may contain relevant amounts of histamine. In the present study a group of 40 patients with suspected histamine intolerance (enteral histaminosis) were included in an oral histamine provocation test using a double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Patients were challenged with sparkling wine samples (0.21) containing negligible amounts of histamine (< 0.02 mg/l and < 0.004 mg histamine per provocation sample) and identical sparkling wine samples containing 20 mg/l histamine (4mg histamine per provocation sample), respectively. 12 out of 40 patients demonstrated clear clinical symptoms following provocation with verum but not placebo. However, blood pressure and heart rate of these patients did not differ significantly between both samples 15 and 30 min after provocation. Only one patient showed symptoms following placebo. 27 patients did not demonstrate differences between both samples. The study shows that even low amounts of histamine in alcoholic beverages may induce clinical symptoms in patients with enteral histaminosis.
