International audienceAbstract – Health literacy and therapeutic patient education: conceptual and methodological relationship.Introduction: The number of studies dealing with Health Literacy (HL) has been growing steadily over thepast ten years, and many have shown that HL has a significant impact on the health status of individuals. A more recentfinding suggests that low health literacy acts as a potential barrier to access to therapeutic patient education (TPE),leading to questions about the relationship between these two fields of practice and study. Methods: To examine therelationship between HL and TPE, we conducted a literature review from January 2013 to January 2014 on a finalselection of 52 references. Discussion: The aim of both health literacy and therapeutic patient education is to givepeople the health skills they need for greater self-determination. This commonality of purpose and aims is reinforcedby the conceptual links between the models underpinning the two fields, based chiefly on sociocognitive and systemicapproaches. Hence the competencies supported by health literacy, which center on health information processing, complementTPE skills particularly well, and impact the effectiveness of therapeutic education programs by enlisting theindividual’s cognitive and emotional resources in the acquisition of self-care and life skills. Conclusion: Therapeuticeducation programs would benefit by addressing health literacy skills via partnerships to fight functional illiteracy andilliteracy, all of which would work together to reduce social health inequalities.Introduction : Alors que le nombre d’études traitant de la « Health Literacy » (HL) est en pleine augmentationdepuis ces dix dernières années, de nombreuses recherches ont mis en évidence l’impact significatif du niveau deHL sur l’état de santé des personnes. Plus récemment, un constat met en évidence qu’un faible niveau de HL constitueraitun obstacle potentiel à l’accès à l’éducation thérapeutique du patient (ETP). Il en découle un questionnement quantau rapport entre ces deux champs de pratiques et d’études. Méthode : Afin d’interroger les rapports entre HL et ETP,une recension des écrits a été réalisée entre janvier 2013 et Janvier 2014 à partir d’une sélection finale de 52 références.Discussion : La HL et l’ETP s’inscrivent dans le même but de conférer aux personnes des compétences en santé auservice d’une auto-détermination plus grande. Cette congruence dans les finalités et les buts de la HL et de l’ETP estrenforcée par les liens conceptuels entre les modèles qui sous-tendent ces deux champs répondant principalement àdes logiques sociocognitives et systémiques. C’est ainsi que les compétences que soutient la HL centrées sur le traitementde l’information en santé sont particulièrement complémentaires avec celles de l’ETP et influent sur l’efficacitédes programmes d’éducation thérapeutique en activant des ressources cognitives et émotionnelles d’une personne pouracquérir les compétences d’auto-soins et d’adaptation à la maladie. Conclusion : Les programmes d’éducation thérapeutiquegagneraient à prendre en compte le niveau de compétence en HL en proposant avec différents partenariats desméthodes de lutte contre l’illettrisme et l’analphabétisme, l’ensemble concourant à la diminution des inégalités socialesde santé
