The Mössbauer effect has been applied to study the melting process via the Debye-Waller factor and to follow the mobile phase at T > Tc. The method is described here and some previous and new results are summarized. The physisorbed films in the submonolayer region of some iron and tin compounds were deposited on the basal plane of Papyex (exfoliated graphite). It is suggested the Mössbauer effect can be used to study the type and magnitude of diffusion in the 2 D liquid state since the lateral mobility affects the average cross section normal to the plane of the foils
