Spalling experiments with alumina ceramics in the uniaxial state of stress at room and elevated temperatures are discussed here from the point of view of the applicability of the one-dimensional wave pattern in the framework of the continuum damage mechanics of brittle elastic materials. Effects of strength and multiple spalling are analysed on the basis of the fracture energy measurements
