Discontinuities such as cracks, fractures or joints in rockmasses can be taken into account in finite element simulations by introducing so-called joint elements. These are zero thickness elements first introduced by Goodman et al. (1968). Four nodes joint elements have been implemented in the Finite Element code CESAR-LCPC. Non-linear elasticity or elasto-plasticity with the Mohr-Coulomb criterion are available for the joint elements. Applications of the numerical tool to the stability of fractured rockmasses and to homogenization of elastic behaviour of micro-cracked rocks are given. Extension of this work to constitutive laws integrating damage is under progress.
