The Modal Distribution (MD) is a time-frequency distribution\udspecifically designed to model the quasi-harmonic, multisinusoidal,\udnature of music signals and belongs to the Cohen\udgeneral class of time-frequency distributions. Signal synthesis\udfrom bilinear time-frequency representations such as the\udWigner distribution has been based on methods which exploit\udan outer-product interpretation of these distributions [1, 2].\udMethods of synthesis from the MD based on a sinusoidalanalysis-\udsynthesis procedure using estimates of instantaneous\udfrequency and amplitude only have been investigated in [3, 4,\ud5]. However, the modal distribution is basically a subsampled\udversion of the smoothed pseudo Wigner distribution and thus\uddoes not lend itself easily to direct inversion such as in the\udouter product methods mentioned above. Furthermore, the\udmodal distribution is real, and the above sinusoidal-analysissynthesis\udmethods rely on phase estimated as the integral of\udinstantaneous frequency. In this paper, we show that in some\udcases, this synthesis results in a roughness or phasiness in the\udsynthesized signal and demonstrate that using minimum\udphase derived from the magnitude spectrum of the\uddistribution produces a timbre closer to the original in the\udcase of certain brass sounds.
