Lees & Simpson (1957) reported that the cyanate ion was a strong inhibitor of nitrite oxidation by Nitrobacter. We have now found that this inhibition by cyanate, and by certain other inorganic ions, may be eliminated or even replaced by a stimulation if the oxygen concentration in the Nitrobacter suspension medium is decreased. A preliminary account of some of this work has already appeared (Butt & Lees, 1958).
