Four new series of chalcones containing imidazole bromonium and benzimidazole bromonium salts with spacer alkyl chains (C  n  ,  n  = 2 and 4) were synthesized and their chemical structure, thermal behavior, photoluminescence and gas sensing ability were characterized.
