IN the experiments on alloys (vide Trans., 1890 to l894), the results of which we have hitherto communicated to the Society, we have made use of mercury thermometers, whose fixed points were determined by the platinum-resistance method. As we are now examining alloys which melt a t temperatures above the range of the mercury thermometer, it has become necessary for us to select a method of measuring high temperatures. Four methods have been commonly used for this purpose.
