1. THE determination of iota1 solid matter in potable waters is a problem of extreme difficulty. The ordinary method of evaporation, followed by desiccation a t 100" (or even at a higher temperature), necessarily leads, in nearly all cases, to chemical change in the very bodies which it is sought to estimate. Under these circumstances the following experiments may perhaps be of interest to analysts. If a bulb, somewhat similar to the old-fashioned specific-gravity bead, but provided with a movable glass weight, be allowed to ascend in a saline solution of given strength, it will in general rise more slowly when more of the solvent is added, Assuming that the total solid matter in the strong solution is known, it is clear that we have thus at our disposal a mode of ascertaining the amount of any intermediate unknown dilution. 2. The bulbs and weights I have employed possess very nearly the external dilrensions shown sectionally on half scale in the accornpanying figure.
