In this work, we present the first example of the self-assembly ofphospholipid monolayers at the interface between air and an ionic solvent. Deepeutectic solvents are a novel class of environmentally friendly non-aqueousroom temperature liquids with tunable properties, that have wide rangingpotential applications and are capable of promoting the self-assembly ofsurfactant molecules. We use a chemically-consistent Bayesian modelling ofX-ray and neutron reflectometry measurements to show that these monolayersbroadly behave as they do on water. This method allows for the monolayerstructure to be determined, alongside the molecular volumes of the individualmonolayer components without the need for water-specific constraints to beintroduced. Furthermore, using this method we are able to better understand thecorrelations present between parameters in the analytical model. This exampleof a non-aqueous phospholipid monolayer has important implications for thepotential uses of these solvents and for our understanding of how biomoleculesbehave in the absence of water.
