Two bi-metallic, organophosphonate-stabilised sandwich-type polyoxomolybdate clusters, [Mo 6 Cu 4 O 16 (OH) 2 (C 4 H 9 PO 3 ) 4 (C 5 H 5 N) 2 (CH 3 O) 4 (H 2 O)] 2- and [Mo 7 Cu 7 O 19 (OH)(CH 3 O) 7 (C 4 H 9 PO 3 ) 6 (C 5 H 5 N) 2 ] 2- , are reported. These compounds are accessed via the "top-down" in situ disassembly of the [Mo 6 O 19 ] 2- Lindqvist species into reactive oligomers, followed by subsequent reassembly with polynuclear Cu II assemblies to form the reported compounds.
