There is a need for developing teaching and learning throughout Higher Education (HE), not least in dentistry. The aims of this paper are to examine dental schools, departments and individual academics as agents of change, to consider barriers to innovation and explore whether funding structures may inadvertently undermine the innovative process. A 'Progress File Learning System' (PFLS), was developed and introduced at one UK dental school to support such innovation. This was guided by previous work involving four UK dental schools aimed at developing progress files for the dental team. A 'learning organisation' approach is suggested as a way of improving teaching and learning in dental training.
