Placing quantum materials into optical cavities provides a unique platformfor controlling quantum cooperative properties of matter, via both weak andstrong light-matter coupling. Here we report the experimental evidence ofreversible cavity control of a metal-to-insulator phase transition in acorrelated solid-state material. We embed the charge density wave material1T-TaS$_{2}$ into cryogenic tunable terahertz cavities and show that a switchbetween conductive and insulating behaviors, associated with a large change inthe sample temperature, is obtained by mechanically tuning the distance betweenthe cavity mirrors and their alignment. The large thermal modification observedis indicative of a Purcell-like scenario in which the spectral profile of thecavity modifies the energy exchange between the material and the externalelectromagnetic field. Our findings provide opportunities for controlling thethermodynamics and macroscopic transport properties of quantum materials byengineering their electromagnetic environment.
