Mars lacks a global magnetic field, and instead possesses small-scale crustalmagnetic fields, making its magnetic environment fundamentally different fromintrinsic magnetospheres like those of Earth or Saturn. Here we report thediscovery of magnetospheric ion drift patterns, typical of intrinsicmagnetospheres, at Mars usingmeasurements fromMarsAtmosphere and VolatileEvolutioNmission. Specifically, we observewedge-like dispersion structures ofhydrogen ions exhibiting butterfly-shaped distributions within the Martiancrustal fields, a feature previously observed only in planetary-scale intrinsicmagnetospheres. These dispersed structures are the results of driftmotions thatfundamentally resemble those observed in intrinsic magnetospheres. Our findingsindicate that the Martian magnetosphere embodies an intermediate case whereboth the unmagnetized and magnetized ion behaviors could be observed because ofthe wide range of strengths and spatial scales of the crustal magnetic fieldsaround Mars.
