Quasicrystals exhibit long-range order but lack translational symmetry. Whengrown as single crystals, they possess distinctive and unusual properties owingto the absence of grain boundaries. Unfortunately, conventional methods such asbulk crystal growth or thin film deposition only allow us to synthesize eitherpolycrystalline quasicrystals or quasicrystals that are at most a fewcentimeters in size. Here, we reveal through real-time and 3D imaging theformation of a single decagonal quasicrystal arising from a hard collisionbetween multiple growing quasicrystals in an Al-Co-Ni liquid. Throughcorresponding molecular dynamics simulations, we examine the underlyingkinetics of quasicrystal coalescence and investigate the effects of initialmisorientation between the growing quasicrystalline grains on the formation ofgrain boundaries. At small misorientation, coalescence occurs following rigidrotation that is facilitated by phasons. Our joint experimental-computationaldiscovery paves the way toward fabrication of single, large-scale quasicrystalsfor novel applications.
