Short DNA linkers are increasingly being exploited for driving specificself-assembly of Brownian objects. DNA-functionalised colloids can assembleinto ordered or amorphous materials with tailored morphology. Recently, thesame approach has been applied to compliant units, including emulsion dropletsand lipid vesicles. The liquid structure of these substrates introduces newdegrees of freedom: the tethers can diffuse and rearrange, radically changingthe physics of the interactions. Unlike droplets, vesicles are extremelydeformable and DNA-mediated adhesion causes significant shape adjustments. Weinvestigate experimentally the thermal response of pairs and networks ofDNA-tethered liposomes and observe two intriguing and possibly usefulcollective properties: negative thermal expansion and tuneable porosity of theliposome networks. A model providing a thorough understanding of thisunexpected phenomenon is developed, explaining the emergent properties out ofthe interplay between the temperature-dependent deformability of the vesiclesand the DNA-mediated adhesive forces.
