Meteorological agencies\udof Ireland and the UK have confirmed that\udwinter (December to February) 2013–2014\ud(W2013–14) set records for precipitation\udtotals and the occurrence of extreme wind\udspeeds1–3. Less clear is whether storminess\ud(characterized as the frequency and intensity\udof cyclones) during W2013–14 was equally\udunprecedented. We assessed multidecadal\udvariations in storminess by considering\udfrequency and intensity together and found\udthat in the context of these large-scale\udcyclone characteristics, W2013–14 was\udindeed exceptional. Given the potential\udsocietal impacts, there is clearly a need\udto better understand the processes\uddriving extreme cyclonic activity in the\udNorth Atlantic
