Secondary metabolites of actinomycetes represent important and major sources of new natural products. Since streptomycin was discovered by Selman Waksman, a large number of biological compounds, in many research areas, such as medicine, organic chemistry and cell biology, have been isolated from cultured broths of actinomycetes. More than 22 000 bioactive compounds have been discovered from secondary metabolites of microorganisms, such as actinomycetes, fungi and bacteria.
