Grand unified theories can admit cosmic strings with fermion zero modes. Suchzero modes result in the string being current-carrying and the formation ofstable remnants, vortons. However, the string zero modes do not automaticallsurvive subsequent phase transitions. In this case the vortons dissipate. It ispossible that the dissipating cosmic vortons create the observed baryonasymmetry of the universe. We show that fermion zero modes are an automaticconsequence cosmic strings in supersymmetric theories. Since supersymmetry isnot observed in nature, we consider possible supersymmetry breaking terms. Someof these terms result in the zero modes being destroyed. We calculate thebaryon asymmetry generated by the consequent dissipating cosmic vortons. If thesupersymmtry breaking scale is high enough, then the dissipating cosmic vortonscould account for the observed baryon asymmetry.Comment: 20 pages; Presented at Peyresq Physics 3, July 199
