Supramolecular systems in which photoinduced charge separation is accomplished by a sequence of electron transfer steps can be highly efficient in terms of quantum yield and lifetime of the long-range charge separated Optimal design of such systems requires precise knowledge of the factors determining the kinetics and thermodynamics of the individual steps.
