The crystal structure of trifluorosulfur(IV)-yl tetrafluoroborate, + fSF' 3 ] (BF4 J has been determined from three dimensional X-ray data. The compound is orthorhombic, a = 9·599(3), b = 5-755(3), c = 8.974(3)A, V = 495·7 J}, z = 4, g.c = 2.36 g cm3. Refinement has proceeded satisfactorily in the space group Pnma, with a final conventional R factor of 0.043 for 700 reflections. The structure consists of discrete SF 3 and BF4 groups. The 3 has site symmetry ~s with interatomic 0 distances S-Fl(twice) = 1.495(2) and S-F2 = 1.499(2) A and bond angles F1-S~Fl = 97.62(7) and F2-S-Fl(twice) = 97·39(12) 0 and effectively c 3 -v symmetry. The BF'4 group is slightly distorted from tetrahedral symmetry . 0 with B-F3 = 1-397(4), B-F4 = 1.393(5), B-F5(twice) = 1.377(3) A,F4-B-F5 = lD8.58(17) F3-B-F4 = 107.63(25), F5-B-F5 = 111.37(1t~) and F3-B-F5(twice) = 110.29(16) 0 • Each SF 3 group is so oriented that the sulfur atom makes short contacts 0 of 2.624(2)(twice) and 2. 593(3) A with fluorine atoms of the three closesL I BF 4 groups: Each sulfur atom is in a trigonally distorted octahedral
