The structure of a unique dinuclear bis-macrocyclic iron complex with a conjugated link between the low-spin iron(II) ions has been determined. This compound has unusually short iron-imine nitrogen bond lengths; it also has an intense near-infrared electronic transition ({lambda} = 874 nm, {var epsilon} = 14,000 M{sup {minus}1} cm{sup {minus}1}) that is assigned to an MLCT. Each iron has two axial CH{sub 3}CN ligands.
