Este trabajo constituye el Capítulo 14 del libro.-- El DOI del volumen 707 es: 10.1021/bk-1998-0707.Due to the number of problems associated with nitrogen presence in fossil organic matter, the origin of nitrogen-containing compounds and their fate upon fossilization is especially important to understand. Nitrogen in living organisms chiefly occurs as amide groups whereas in fossil fuels, it mostly corresponds to heterocyclic structures. Based on results reported in previous studies and those we recently obtained using solid state 15N NMR, it appears that (i) some amides exhibit a higher resistance than expected and (ii) the above change in nitrogen functionality is completed in immature kerogens and might be an early diagenetic process. The types of pathways which can be invoked to explain amide resistance are discussed along with those which might be implicated in N functionality change.Peer reviewe
