Nanomechanical resonators have emerged as sensors with exceptionalsensitivities. These sensing capabilities open new possibilities in the studiesof the thermodynamic properties in condensed matter. Here, we use mechanicalsensing as a novel approach to measure the thermal properties oflow-dimensional materials. We measure the temperature dependence of both thethermal conductivity and the specific heat capacity of a transition metaldichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer down to cryogenic temperature, something thathas not been achieved thus far with a single nanoscale object. Thesemeasurements show how heat is transported by phonons in two-dimensionalsystems. Both the thermal conductivity and the specific heat capacitymeasurements are consistent with predictions based on first-principles.
