Two recent articles present results that allegedly exclude a possiblemultimodal distribution of the hydrated electron in ultraviolet photoelectronspectra. The first article bases its conclusion on the assumption that thenon-Gaussian genuine band shape previously retrieved for the solvated electronin liquid water is an artefact arising from insufficient electron scatteringcross sections used in the retrieval. The second article excludes a multimodalband shape based on a photoelectron spectrum of the solvated electron in waterclusters recorded at a single ultraviolet photon energy, and it further assumesthat cluster results are transferable to the liquid without furtherjustification. Here, we show that based on current data multimodaldistributions cannot be unambiguously excluded. Furthermore, thetransferability of cluster results to the liquid can neither be justified norrefuted on the basis of currently available experimental ultravioletphotoelectron spectra.
