Enhanced competency training is becoming anincreasingly prominent aspect of the Royal College ofPhysicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) emer-gency medicine (EM) program. Dened loosely asadditional training in an area relevant to the practice ofEM, the enhanced competency training pursued byCanadian EM residents can include accredited sub-specialty fellowships such as intensive care or pediatricEM; unaccredited fellowships in areas such as simula-tion or emergency medical services; and graduatedegree programs in medical education, public health,epidemiology, or business administration. These pro-grams are pursued by a large number of EM traineesin the RCPSC program, often during their fourthpostgraduate year of training.Despite their prominence, little has been publishedon applying to enhanced training programs in theCanadian context. The lack of literature, the authors’experiences applying for additional training, and theimportance of this topic for EM residents were theimpetus for this article. Herein, we outline the currentstatus of enhanced training and provide advice tointerested EM residents.THE CURRENT STATUS OF ENHANCEDTRAINING PROGRAMSIn 2008, the RCPSC formally modied the EM train-ing requirements to include “a minimum of six (6)months devoted to achieving particular expertise eitherin a scholarly activity or a clinical area, pertinent to thepractice of the specialty of Emergency Medicine.”
