Background: Obesity may be associated with early vascular changes. Some data suggest that body weight and fat distribution are related to arterial stiffness. The current study was designed to examine aortic stiffness in patients with mild to severe obesity in two biracial populations: one aged 14 to 40 years and one aged 41 to 64 years. Patients and methods: The study complied 123 subjects with overweight to obesity, all of them underwent a physical examination, two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography and blood pressure measurement. During echocardiographic examinations, aortic stiffness index (s) as a characteristic of aortic elasticity was evaluated from ascending aortic diameter and blood pressure data. Results: Data are presented in the Table. Conclusion: The present study has clearly shown that aortic stiffness is altered among patients with severe obesity even in young adults. Young obese patients have similarly increased s than in older subjects without severe obesity. Systolic and diastolic aortic diameters are increasing with age, but obes subjects within similar age group has larger systolic and diastolic aortic diameters suggesting early vascular remodelling in obesity.
