Formation of neointima due to the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is a common characteristic of the response of arterial wall to injury. To investigate the role of histamine in the formation of neointima, immunohistochemical changes of L-histidine decarboxylase (HDC), a histamine-forming enzyme, were examined in the balloon-injured porcine coronary artery. Intense immunostaining of HDC was observed in the neointimal SMCs. Western blot analysis revealed an expression of 63 kDa HDC in the injured artery but not in the uninjured artery. These results indicate a marked upregulation of HDC in the neointimal SMCs.
