In this issue of Scandinavian Journal of Pain, Sara Edlund and er colleagues explore pain patients’ perceptions of validation nd invalidation from their physicians preand post-treatment 1]. Validation/invalidation is a promising area of research in pain anagement, focusing on the importance of feeling accepted and nderstood. Whilst validating responses communicate understandng and acceptance to another (i.e. that their thoughts, feelings nd/or behaviours are understandable and legitimate), invalidation ommunicates non-understanding and non-acceptance (i.e. that he individual’s experiences are somehow wrong or illegitimate) 2–4]. This study explores several important questions in validaion research which have not yet been investigated; Can pain atients be clustered in terms of their perceptions of validaion/invalidation from their physician? Are patients’ perceptions f validation/invalidation from their physician stable over time? ow do perceptions of feeling understood and accepted (or not) by he physician affect patients’ experiences of pain (in terms of pain ntensity and severity ratings, mood, pain catastrophizing, anxiety ensitivity and treatment outcome)?
