Recent advances in the development of a chiral linear $\sigma$-model with(axial-)vector mesons are presented. The model is based on the basicrequirements of global chiral symmetry and dilatation invariance. The role of(axial-)vector states turns out to be crucial both in the meson and the baryonsectors. First results at nonzero temperature and density are discussed.
