We calculate the cross sections for both electromagnetic and diffractivedissociation of protons for semiexclusive production of $J/\psi$ mesons inproton-proton collisions at the LHC. Several differential distributions inmissing mass ($M_X$), or single-particle variables related exclusively to the$J/\psi$ meson are calculated for $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV as an example. The crosssections and distributions are compared to the cross section of the purelyexclusive reaction $p p \to p p J/\psi$. We show the corresponding ratio as afunction of $J/\psi$ meson rapidity. We compare the distributions for purelyelectromagnetic and purely diffractive proton excitations/dissociation. Wepredict cross sections for electromagnetic and diffractive excitations ofsimilar order of magnitude.
