We show that the relatively large best fit value of $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13} =0.14 \, (0.17)$ measured in the T2K experiment for fixed values of i) the DiracCP violation phase $\delta = 0$, and ii) the atmospheric neutrino mixingparameters $\theta_{23} = \pi/4$, $|\Delta m^2_{32}| = 2.4 \times 10^{-3} \;{\rm eV}^2$, can be reconciled with the Daya Bay result $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13} =0.090 \pm 0.009$ if the effects of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) inthe relevant $\bar \nu_e \to \bar \nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu \to \nu_e$ oscillationprobabilities are taken into account.
