Large acceptance spectrometers at in-flight RI separators have playedsignificant roles in investigating the structure of exotic nuclei. Suchspectrometers are in particular useful for probing unbound states of exoticnuclei, using invariant mass spectroscopy with reactions at intermediate andhigh energies. We discuss here the key characteristic features of suchspectrometers, by introducing the recently commissioned SAMURAI facility at theRIBF, RIKEN. We also explore the issue of cross talk in the detection ofmultiple neutrons, which has become crucial for exploring further unboundstates and nuclei beyond the neutron drip line. Finally we discuss futureperspectives for large acceptance spectrometers at the new-generation RI-beamfacilities.
