The ever-quickening pace of new discoveries benefited by advances in our understanding of human genomics and other methodologies seems to be making yesterday’s breakthroughs seem naïve and antiquated at lightning speed. This may be the case for cardiac stem cell therapies, which less than two decades ago were heralded as a breakthrough technology for building new heart muscle and rescuing infarcted myocardium following myocardial infarction. Despite great promise in innumerable animal studies, the delivery of exogenous stem cells has however, for a variety of reasons, been largely unsuccessful in human trials, and it seems it may be well past time to turn the page on original thinking in this field.
