Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is one of the most frequent complications encountered after heart surgery, and significantly increases complications and mortality. An obstructed chest tube, leaving unevacuated blood around the heart and lungs, can lead to atrial inflammation, which can trigger POAF.
