Neutrophil infiltration of tissues as part of the inflammatory response to cardiac surgery is one of the major mediators of postoperative multiple-organ dysfunction. Omega-3 fatty acids markedly attenuate endothelial cell inflammatory responses, including upregulation of neutrophil adhesion molecules.
