We perform thorough molecular-dynamics simulations to compare elasticity andyielding of atomic crystals and model semicrystalline polymers, the lattercharacterized by very similar positional ordering with respect to atomiccrystals and considerable bond disorder. We find that the elastic modulus, theshear yield strength and the critical yield strain of semicrystalline polymersare higher than (modulus and yield strength), or comparable to (criticalstrain), the corresponding ones of atomic crystals. The findings suggest thatthe bond disorder suppresses dislocation-mediated plasticity in polymericsolids with positional order.
