The required upgradation of network capacity of the single-mode fiber constrained by the non-linear Shannon’s limit, and capacity provisioning needed by the future diverse Internet traffic can be resolved by the Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) based Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) (SDM-b-EONs). With introduction of the new freedom degree of ‘space’ by SDM, the resource (i.e., spectrum and space (core)) assignment issue in the SDM-b-EONs translates into the Routing, Modulation Format, Core, and Spectrum Assignment (RMFCSA) problem. In the current work, we formulate a route-enabled integer linear program (ILP) model to find solutions of the RMFCSA problem. Further, in view of reasonable execution times, we also propose a heuristic algorithm which finds solutions of the RMFCSA problem in two-steps and uses one of the four introduced ordering strategies. We evaluate performance of the ILP model and the heuristic algorithm in terms of used spectrum and execution times. Lastly, as a novelty, to compare performance of the ILP model with the heuristic algorithm using the various introduced ordering strategies, we define new performance metrics based on the used spectrum.
