Der Einfluss zeitgeschichtlicher Kontexte auf die Entstehung von Walter ChristallersTheorie der zentralen Orte, die er im Jahr 1933 in seiner Schrift „Die zentralen Orte inSüddeutschland“ veröffentlichte, ist bis heute nicht umfassend untersucht worden. ChristallersZentrale-Orte-Modell geht von der Vorstellung dezentraler Binnenwirtschaft ausund reagiert darin in mehrfacher Weise auf die Krisendiskussion im Kontext der weltwirtschaftlichenDepression um 1930. Als Idealbild einer effizienten und autarken nationalenWirtschaftslandschaft wird das Modell nach der nationalsozialistischen Machtübernahmevon Johann Wilhelm Ludowici, dem Siedlungsbeauftragten im Stab desStellvertreters des Führers, aufgenommen. Nach Entfesselung des zweiten Weltkriegsentwerfen mehrere Institutionen der NS-Raumplanung Leitlinien zentralörtlicher Hierarchienfür die Siedlungs- und Germanisierungspläne in eroberten Territorien. Schließlichwird das Modell in der Endphase der NS-Diktatur auch für die Neuordnung des„Altreiches“ diskutiert. Ausschlaggebend hierfür sind bevölkerungspolitische EffizienzundRationalisierungsziele.Diese historischen Zusammenhänge sind für die gegenwärtige Diskussion um Geltungund Fortentwicklung des Zentrale-Orte-Konzeptes nicht ohne Bedeutung, da siedie zeitspezifischen Bedingtheiten eines Erklärungsansatzes verdeutlichen, der gemeinhinals objektiv gültige Theorie gewertet wird.To this day there is still no comprehensive account available of the influence of the contemporaryhistorical context on the development of Walter Christaller’s central-placetheory, first set out in 1933 in his work entitled ‘Die zentralen Orte in Süddeutschland’(‘Southern Germany’s central places’). Christaller’s central-place model is founded onthe notion of a polycentric domestic economy, and thus in many ways can be seen as aresponse to the discussion on the crisis taking place at the time in the context of theworld economic depression around 1930. Following the seizure of power by the NationalSocialists, this model was taken up by Johann Wilhelm Ludowici, settlement officerwithin the staff of the Führer’s deputy, as the ideal model of an efficient and autarticnational economic landscape. After the outbreak of the Second World War, various institutionsresponsible for spatial planning in Nazi Germany framed guidelines for drawingup plans for settling and Germanising the conquered territories based on a centralplacehierarchy. During the final phase of the Nazi dictatorship, this model was alsounder discussion as a strategy for reordering the Altreich, the Old Reich within its 1937borders. The key merit of this model was seen in its efficiency for demographic policyand the rationality of its goals.This historical context is not without significance for the debate currently in processon the validity and further refinement of the central-place concept. The historical backgroundhelps to explain the specific circumstances of the time which underlie an explanatoryapproach which is generally regarded as still having objective theoreticalvalidity
