The aim of this paper was to verify a\udpossible correlation between the pore-size of meso-\udporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and the sizes of\udgold nanoparticles (AuNPs) obtained by an impreg-\udnation of gold(III) chloride hydrate solution in the\udMSNs, followed by a specific thermal treatment.\udMesoporous silica nanoparticles with tunable pore\uddiameter were synthesized via a surfactant-assisted\udmethod. Tetraethoxysilane as silica precursor, cetyl-\udtrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant\udand toluene as swelling agent were used. By varying\udthe CTAB–toluene molar ratio, the average dimension\udof the pores could be tuned from 2.8 to 5.5 nm.\udSuccessively, thiol groups were grafted on the surface\udof the MSNs. Finally, the thermal evolution of the gold\udsalt, followed by ‘‘in situ’’ X-ray powder diffraction\ud(XRPD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA),\udrevealed an evident correlation among the degradation\udof the thiol groups, the pore dimension of the MSNs\udand the size of the AuNPs. The samples were\udcharacterized by means of nitrogen adsorption–\uddesorption, transmission electron microscopy, small-\udangle X-ray scattering, XRPD ‘‘in situ’’ by synchro-\udtron radiation, and ‘‘ex situ’’ by conventional tech-\udniques, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform\udspectroscopy, and TGA
