Throughout the latter part of the twentieth and the first decade of the twenty-first centuries, union mergers have occurred with increasing rapidity primarily as a defensive strategy in combating capital’s hegemony in the industrial and postindustrial workplace. Combining two or more labor organizations into one body has resulted in a number of benefits for the merged union including the development of efficiencies of scale in organizing, negotiating as well as in administering collective bargaining agreements. Many union mergers are successful, creating a synergy which helps to advance the interests of the new organization’s members. But what happens when unions join together but the resulting merger is less than satisfactory? Unfortunately, this topic has been insufficiently explored in the industrial relations literature. In this interesting, well-written and timely essay, one of the foremost experts on union mergers in the United States, Dr. Gary Chaison, Professor of Industrial Relations at Clark University, examines the 2004 merger of the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE) and the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union (HERE) and its subsequent disintegration only 5 years later in 2009. While Professor Chaison contends that there is little information concerning the process of union mergers and its related outcomes, the labor organizations resulting from these combinations, such as UNITE HERE, although larger in size, might ultimately function less effectively than the individual unions that existed prior to the fusion.
