Traditional\udhypotheses establish that larvae of coastal species are\udswept offshore during strong upwelling periods producing\udlow recruitment rates; however, recent studies have demonstrated\udthat this hypothesis is not supported by larval\uddistribution data. The present study examines the influence\udof upwelling filaments on larval advection and wastage.\udDuring August 1993, the transport of Upogebia pusilla was\udanalysed in relation to an offshore filament off Northwest\udAfrica. This mesoscale structure was generated by a trapped,\udquasi-permanent cyclonic eddy located between the\udCanary Islands and the African shelf and extended 150 km\udwestward into the oligotrophic open ocean waters. The\udhorizontal distribution depicted by U. pusilla larvae was\udstrongly influenced by the oceanographic features of the\udCanaries Coastal Transition Zone (CTZ). Specifically, the\udlarvae were closely associated with upwelling front and\udfilament position, showing that these neritic larvae can be\udadvected 10–100s of kilometres offshore through the filament.\udHowever, the low larval densities observed in the\udsamples suggest that many larvae might remain close to the\udcoast, thus avoiding seaward transport.
