International audienceAbstract In the context of climate change, concern is raisingabout the negative effects of some pruning waste managementpractices. On the one hand, burning of pruning residue is seenas controversial regarding its contribution to greenhouse gasemissions. On the other hand, chipping the wood and using itas mulch is seen as highly risky regarding pest and diseasecontrol. Considering these issues, it is important to try to understandhow and why these practices are adopted. In thisstudy, we conducted in-depth interviews and survey questionnairesin the olive-growing region of Sierra Mágina(Andalusia) in order to explore (1) which were the pruningwaste management practices in place, (2) which had beenthese practices in the past, and (3) which were the factorsinfluencing the choice of different practices. Since 2010, therehas been a shift in pruning waste management practices in thisregion, from stubble burning to chipping. This change seemsto be led by older/retired farmers that have young and noninheritedgroves. Moreover, this change is shown not to benecessarily a result of Bgreening^ in agriculture but rather aresult of intensification and mechanization. These results arediscussed regarding the processes of innovation adoption inthe region and the possible unforeseen externalities that derivefrom this change in pruning waste management practices
