For supersymmetric gauge theories a consistent regularization scheme thatpreserves supersymmetry and gauge invariance is not known. In this article wetackle this problem for supersymmetric QED within the framework of algebraicrenormalization. For practical calculations, a non-invariant regularizationscheme may be used together with counterterms from all power-countingrenormalizable interactions. From the Slavnov--Taylor identity, expressinggauge invariance, supersymmetry and translational invariance, simple symmetryconditions are derived that are important in a twofold respect: they establishexact relations between physical quantities that are valid to all orders, andthey provide a powerful tool for the practical determination of thecounterterms. We perform concrete one-loop calculations in dimensionalregularization, where supersymmetry is spoiled at the regularized level, andshow how the counterterms necessary to restore supersymmetry can be read offeasily. In addition, a specific example is given how the supersymmetrytransformations in one-loop order are modified by non-local terms.Comment: 38 pages, 4 figure
