This study aimed to assess the combined effects of\udlong-term nitrogen (N) supply and nitrogen deposition\ud(Ndep) on carbon (C) accumulation within\udSitka spruce [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] plantations\udin Scotland. Six study sites established from\ud1970 to 1982 were periodically N-fertilized, monitored\udover time and commonly surveyed in 2010.\udSoil, aboveground biomass, and ground vegetation\udC stock changes were analyzed; aboveground C\udstocks were correlated with total additional N\udexperienced at each site, that is, the sum of\udexperimental N supply (Nadd) and site-specific\udaccumulated Ndep from 1900 to 2010. Results\udshowed a positive N effect on aboveground tree C\udstock and no decline in tree growth was observed\udeither during fertilization or after the latest N\udaddition. The amount of C in litter was significantly\udhigher in experimentally N-treated plots, whereas\udthe amount of C in understory vegetation was\udhigher in control plots. Pooling all the compartments\ud(that is, understory vegetation, litter, soil,\udand tree biomass) the total ecosystem C content\udwas estimated for each site, and at most sites a\udhigher C stock was estimated for N-treated plots.\udDifferences in aboveground C accumulation rates\udbetween treated and control plots were lower at\udsites with high levels of accumulated Ndep. Our\udresults indicate that site-specific accumulated Ndep\udshould be considered to understand tree growth\udresponses to N fertilization
