The optical response of materials based on gold nanoparticle assembliesdepends on many parameters regarding both material morphology and lightexcitation characteristics. In this paper, the interplay between the opticaland thermal responses of such media is particularly investigated under itstheoretical aspect. Both conventional and original modeling approaches arepresented and applied to concrete cases. We first show how the interaction oflight with matrix-embedded gold nanoparticles can result in the generation ofthermal excitations through different energy exchange mechanisms. We thendescribe how thermal processes can affect the optical response of ananoparticle assembly. Finally, we connect both aspects and point out theirinvolvement in the nonlinear optical response of nanocomposite media. Thisallows us to tackle two key issues in the field of third-order nonlinearproperties of gold nanoparticles: The influence of the generalized thermal lensin the long laser pulse regime and the hot electron contribution to the goldparticle intrinsic third-order susceptibility, including its spectraldispersion and intensity-dependence. Additionally, we demonstrate the possiblesignificant influence of the heat carrier ballistic regime and phononrarefaction in the cooling dynamics of an embedded gold nanoparticle subsequentto ultrafast pulsed laser excitation.
