OR the past several years, considerable political attention has focused on decreasing the wait times in certain areas of health care identified to be high priority, including cancer care, cardiac care, diagnostic imaging, joint replacement and cataract surgery. Anesthesiologists have played a crucial role in improving access, particularly to cardiac care and arthroplasties, by improving postoperative pain control and facilitating rapid discharge from hospital. 1 Chronic pain management is another area in which anesthesiologists have traditionally played a lead role. A recent survey of hospital-based services for non-cancer pain treatment in Quebec found that almost 30% of anesthesiologists in that province were involved in treating chronic pain. 2 Approximately one Canadian in five suffers from chronic non-malignant pain, defined as pain present on most days, for a minimum of six months. The prevalence increases with age. 3 A study commissioned in 2004 by the Alberta Ministry of Health and Welfare, found that in the Calgary Health Region, 3% (30,000) were suffering from severe, disabling chronic pain.
